The Cherrywood Collection of Classic Chinese Coins
GreatCollections to auction recently discovered Chinese rarities

March 15, 2019.  Irvine, Calif. – GreatCollections is pleased to announce the discovery of a major collection of Chinese coins, which will be featured in our April auctions.  Named “The Cherrywood Collection”, the group of rare coins, including bronze and silver patterns, were housed in a small cherry wood box and have not been seen in over 100 years.

Among the highlights include examples of the Year 3 (1911) Long-Whiskered Dragon Silver Dollar Pattern, L&M 29, graded NGC Specimen-64 and the Year 3 (1911) Large-Tailed Dragon Silver Dollar Pattern, L&M 33, graded NGC Proof-65.

The Large-Tailed Dragon Pattern is the first example to appear in any major auction in over 10 years and is the finest certified by a full two grading points.  It is likely the finest in existence.  The coin exhibits attractive original toning, from the small manila envelopes that housed the coins for past 100 years.

The Long-Whiskered Dragon Pattern is another important member of the Flying Dragon Dollar pattern series and only seven coins have been graded in all grades.  This example ranks among the finest known.

The collection of 26 coins has all been professionally graded and certified by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) and is being offered without reserve.  The coins are currently open for bidding and the auctions will end on April 14th and 21st.  Aside from the two Dragon patterns mentioned above, there are many other bronze and silver patterns issued between 1906 and 1911.

Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman and Grading Finalizer, personally viewed the highlights and commented: "The Cherrywood Collection is a truly outstanding group of rare and high-grade vintage Chinese coins. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to grade such a special collection."

Ian Russell, owner/president of GreatCollections, had this to say about the group: "This collection is one of the most important discoveries in Chinese numismatics over the past decade, and we are excited to offer it in our auctions. Aside from the immense rarity, I particularly love the originality of these coins. All have a similar look to them from the small envelopes they were stored in for the last 100 years."

A special brochure has been prepared for this collection and is available by request.  Please telephone 1-800-442-6467 (+1-949-679-4180) or e-mail info@greatcollection.com.

GreatCollections will be attending the Hong Kong Coin Show to be held at the Mira Hotel in Kowloon on March 29th-31st, 2019 and will have all coins from The Cherrywood Collection on display at table B21.  They will also be on view at the Baltimore Coin Convention (Table 349) and by appointment at GreatCollections’ Irvine office.  To find out more, please visit www.greatcollections.com or telephone 1-800-44-COINS (+1-949-679-4180).
