Steve Deeds (1947 - 2013)

Ian Russell on Thu, Mar 28, 2013 08:19:06 AM
It is with great sadness we say goodbye to Steve Deeds, who passed away last night in Southern California.

"Deeds", as we called him, was a good friend to Raeleen and me over the past 10 years and particularly since we launched GreatCollections.  He was a stalwart supporter and invaluable advisor to us.

Many collectors and dealers dealt with him over his 50 years in the coin industry.  His word was golden.  He orchestrated some of the largest deals in coins; perhaps the most notable was the Redfield Hoard, which he purchased with two partners in the 1970s.  This hoard contained over 500,000 Morgan and Peace Dollars!

I remember him telling me of the early 1970s in New York City, where he operated a shop.  In 1973 alone, he made over $100 million in coin sales.  Even 40 years later that is a staggering number; in 1973 it was unheard of.  It was the beginning of a glorious career in the coin business that ended far too soon.

He will be missed.
