Key-date 1911-D $2.5 Found in California

Ian Russell on Sun, Oct 19, 2014 11:56:51 AM
Recently, a client told us about a $2.5 Indian, which was passed down in his family.  At that point the coin was uncertified and kept in a pouch with other coins his father kept for decades.  The coin was recently graded by PCGS as the key-date 1911-D Quarter Eagle, graded MS-64+, which ranks in the top 40 coins known at PCGS.

The 1911-D Quarter Eagle is the key to the series, with a mintage of just 55,680 pieces.  The next lowest mintage in the series, for comparative purposes, is the 1927 with 388,000 pieces.

Only 15 coins have been graded by PCGS at the MS-64+ level, with 25 coins finer.  This coin jumps $25,000+ at the MS-65 level, which makes this 64+ desirable on many levels.

This coin is being sold completely unreserved.  Bidding ends Sunday, November 2nd.
