Type Set Includes 1796 No Stars Quarter Eagle Graded PCGS XF-45

January 20, 2014, Irvine, Calif. – GreatCollections is pleased to announce the sale of the Dr. Spencer Paterson Collection of U.S. Type Coins.  Comprised of over 100 coins, the collection spans early copper, silver and gold coins, and will be auctioned by GreatCollections on Sunday, February 9th.

"It is our privilege to auction Dr. Paterson's type set, which includes scarce coins like the 1796 No Stars Quarter Eagle, among other rarities," said Ian Russell, President/founder of GreatCollections.

The 1796 No Stars Quarter Eagle is a one-year type issue, with a low mintage of just 963 pieces.  About 100 coins are known today in various grades.  Dr. Paterson’s coin has been graded XF-45 by PCGS and is valued in the PCGS Price Guide at $110,000.

Russell added: "The coins are being sold individually without reserves.  Another impressive coin is the 1795 Half Eagle (Small Eagle) graded NGC XF-45.  Both the Quarter Eagle and this Half Eagle have never appeared in public auction until now."

All coins from the Dr. Paterson Collection will be on view at the Long Beach Coin Expo from Thursday, January 30th through Saturday February 1st, and will also be available for viewing by appointment at GreatCollections' Irvine, California office.
