1999 Silver Eagle Sell for $24,750 at GreatCollections...

One of the notable realizations from our auction on Sunday was the 1999 Silver Eagle that sold for $24,750.01 (inclusive of the 10% buyer's fee).

The coin was graded NGC MS-70, one of just 78 coins assigned this top graded by NGC.  PCGS has not yet assigned a single 1999 Silver Eagle with the perfect grade.

Bidding started 10 days ago at $14,000 and increased with several unique bidders moving the bid to $20,001 by the last day of the auction.  With several more bids received in the last hour, the coin was won for $22,500.01 plus the 10% buyer's fee.

The winning bidder is an advanced collector of U.S. coins and has purchased classics as well as other scarce modern issues in high grades.

Most 1999 Silver Eagles are in poor condition for different reasons.  The coins easily damage and have a low grade rate for MS-69s.  Like the 2000, they easily spot, and not a light spot - many have severe spotting/marks.

The consignor of the coin purchased it 10 years ago when not as many people collected MS-70 Silver Eagles.  Today, it is one of the most widely collected series.

This was the first Silver Eagle to exceed $20,000 at GreatCollections, while several over the past year have exceeded $10,000.
