The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is considered one of the most beautiful US coins ever struck, appreciated even in 1907 when the coin first appeared. Its original high relief design proved too difficult to mint at high speeds, so Charles E. Barber was assigned to modify it. Like Saint-Gaudens' Indian Eagle, the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" was originally excluded from his Double Eagle. It was later added in 1908 and continued through 1933.
GreatCollections has sold 7,272 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles in the past 11 years, selling at prices from $1,056 to $288,000, in grades 1 to 68. Of these, 1274 were approved by CAC.
The design was made by: Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
