The Half Eagle was the first gold coin struck for the United States. Authorized in 1792, it was first struck in 1795. Capped Bust Right Half Eagles were minted from 1795 to 1807. There are many die varieties and combinations of early Half Eagles, as the steel dies used were extremely valuable and were used and re-used until they wore out.
