What is the difference between auctions and "Buy Now" items?

Most items listed on GreatCollections are either for auction or instant "Buy Now".

Auctions:  These items have a minimum bid and an end time when bidding will stop. You may place a bid at or above the minimum bid stated and the winning bidder is awarded the item at one bid increment above the second highest bidder.

Buy Now:  These items are at a fixed price and are available for immediate purchase.  Just click on the "Buy Now" button and you instantly win the item for the Buy Now price.

Auction and Buy Now:  Some items have a Minimum Bid as well as a Buy Now price.  You have two options here.  One, you can Buy Now, and the item is yours at the Buy Now price.  If you prefer the auction route, you can place a minimum bid (which is usually cheaper than the Buy Now price) and the item is an auction until the end time.  Note, as soon as someone places a bid on the item, the Buy Now option disappears.
