GreatCollections to Auction Discovery Piece – Missing Edge Lettering
2014-D Sacagawea Dollar is still the lone example known.
January 30, 2015, Irvine, Calif. – GreatCollections is currently auctioning the only known example of the 2014-D Sacagawea Dollar with missing edge lettering. The coin was recently discovered by ANACS as they were grading a bulk submission of the coin and is the subject of articles in CoinWorld and Numismatic News.
The U.S. Mint produced 50,000 of these coins and all were supposed to have edge lettering. They quickly sold out and have prices have since increased on the secondary market.
"Since each coin has to be reviewed by the grading services as they are being graded (to determine whether the lettering is inverted or not), a large number of these have already been checked by default – it’s likely going to be the rarest of all of the Missing Edge Lettering modern dollars" said Ian Russell, President/founder of GreatCollections.
Russell continued, "The coin is being sold unreserved with bidding to start at $1. Bidding ends on Sunday, February 8th."
