Finest 1903-S Gold Eagle at GC
Ian Russell on Fri, Nov 22, 2013 08:36:13 PM
GreatCollections is proud to offer this rare 1903-S Liberty Gold Eagle, which is tied for finest known at PCGS with only two other coins.

1903-S Liberty Eagle at GreatCollections

To date, PCGS has graded over 169,000 With Motto Liberty Head eagles. Of these coins, only 17 have ever been accorded an MS67 grade with just three finer. That means that, as a type, only 0.01 (that is one tenth of one percent!) of all With Motto 10 Libs exist in Superb Gem condition. Clearly, these coins are rare, no matter what date.

Viewed as an individual date, the 1903-S is common as one would expect from a gold coin of this era with a mintage of 538,000. The 1903-S eagle is readily available in grades up to an including MS64 but Gems are scarcer than commonly believed. In MS67, this date is a true condition rarity with just three pieces having ever been graded by PCGS with none better.

This coin, which is housed in an older holder, has been off the market for many years and it represents an unusual opportunity  for the condition-oriented type collector. It exhibits virtually unmarked surfaces with great luster and rich natural color. The strike is razor sharp and the overall level of eye appeal is as high as one can hope for with a 100+ year old large-sized gold coin.

It could be years before you have another chance to acquire a PCGS graded MS67 example of the With Motto Liberty Head type.

Bidding Ends Sunday, December 1st, 2013
