A Recently Discovered 1837 Half Eagle...
Ian Russell on Thu, Nov 01, 2012 12:15:02 AM
About a year ago, we handled the sale of an impressive coin collection for a gentleman.  The coins brought good money, mostly because the collector had an eye for quality.

At the time, the client mentioned he was keeping one coin, a high grade 1837 Half Eagle, graded PCGS MS-64+ and now verified by CAC.  The owner purchased the coin 40 years ago from his local dealer, and now this is the first time it's appearing at auction.

If you view the PCGS population report, it shows two graded MS-66, one at MS-65 and this is the only MS-64+.  The MS-65 sold for $100,625 in 2010.

This coin clearly avoided circulation, and remember, back in 1837, the Half Eagle was the largest denomination of a coin.  It has an amazing fresh appearance, rarely seen in gold of this era.

GreatCollections will auction the coin on Sunday, November 18th.
