A 1996-P 100 Yuan Platinum Unicorn coin from China realized $13,750 at GreatCollections Coin Auctions on October 30, 2011.
Of this particular year and issue, only 500 were produced. The coin was graded Proof-69 DCAM by PCGS, one of the leading third-party grading services for coins worldwide.
"Even though the intrinsic value was only about $1650, we are proud that we were able to market and attract multiple bidders on this modern rarity from China," said Ian Russell, President of GreatCollections.
Bidding started at $10,000 on the coin, and several bidders moved the coin up until it finally sold for $13,750 to a private buyer in the U.S.
GreatCollections plans to expand its offering of world coins in upcoming months.
