|GC Item Title:||Australia 2015-P G$500 Gold Wedge Tailed Eagle 5 oz. PCGS Proof-70 DCAM (Mercanti Signed Label) (AGW = 5.0 oz.)|
|Description:||Mintage of just 99. In American numismatics, John Mercanti is well-known as the 12th Chief U.S. Mint Engraver and the designer of the Silver Eagle reverse. He produced more coin and medal designs than any other employee in the Mint’s history, with over 100 pieces credited directly to him. This includes a wide variety of commemorative coins, state quarters and medals.|
After retiring from the U.S. Mint, Mercanti entered into a special collaborative project with the Perth Mint of Australia. He personally designed a special series of Wedge-Tailed Eagle coins, which have become highly coveted collectibles among both American and Australian collectors. The pieces were struck in gold, silver and platinum in a wide variety of sizes. The rarest (and most impressive) coin in the series is the 2015 five ounce gold Wedge-Tailed Eagle.
Just 99 pieces were struck in total; this represents one of the lowest mintages in Perth Mint history. In fact, it is difficult to think of any modern coin with a mintage under 100! Each coin is composed of 99.99% pure gold. The obverse (as is customary for all Australian coinage) displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth, while the reverse depicts Mercanti’s skillfully crafted and beautifully designed Wedge-Tailed Eagle motif.
The specimen being offered currently is graded Proof 70 Deep Cameo by PCGS. For such a large coin to be absolutely perfect is truly remarkable. In addition, the coin has been encapsulated with a certification tag hand-signed by John Mercanti himself. His autograph adds even greater allure to a truly rare and special piece.
Over time, more and more numismatists will be building complete Wedge-Tailed Eagle sets. They will attempt to own one specimen of each year, metal and denomination. This coin is the undisputed key to the series – and for most collectors the final piece required to make any set truly complete. It is well-positioned to gain in popularity and value over time.
